Floorball is a fascinating sport. It’s fast, safe, easy to master and most importantly super popular with children of all ages. We are currently looking to grow our junior teams and are running trials for all ages on Tuesdays at Balgowlah Boys High School. Please email trial@northernbeachesfloorball.com.au to find out when and where.

2013 Summer Floorball Party – February 23

Summer is well and truly here and we know you’ve been waiting to finally play floorball outdoors again. On February 23 the Northern Beaches Summer Floorball Party is happening and registrations are now open. It will be the same tried and tested format as per last year. 4on4 competition with maximum 6 players able to play for one team, so great idea to register two or more teams. But please be quick as we are strictly limited to a maximum of 12 teams or you risk missing out. You will sure to have a great time:

•4on4 open mixed tournament

•Team-neutral keepers

•Beach Break

•Last Chance Round

•DJ

•Players Party in Manly

NBO 2012 – The Wrap Up

1,428 minutes of Floorball played by 249 players, scoring 275 goals in 34 games to establish 3 winners!

These are some of the NBO 2012 stats! But NBO is of course a lot more than just numbers. Firstly there was the amazing sportsmanship displayed by all players and we thank all the captains and team managers once again for their help running a smooth tournament at a rapid pace. Thanks to all the helpers as well – especially the ones that were asked to ref the finals at – for obvious reasons – short notice. We also can’t tell you how much it means to us to consistently have teams committing to travel from all over Australia to play NBO each year. Floorball in Sydney is better for it. So thank you for all interstate and out of town teams making the effort. Without a doubt each and everyone of the over 200 players will have their own personal highlight and memory to remember and take back to the next floorball court they play whether that will be in WA, VIC, QLD or NSW. As the organisers we have picked the number one highlight to be this one. Noah Jovanovic from the Peninsula juniors scoring the first ever goal for his club in their first junior floorball competition! Now it wasn’t just the fact that Noah scored that made this moment special – it was the goal celebration by Noah and his team mates along with the roaring applause from each and everyone in the venue. I’m estimating well over 200 with all parents on top of all players. I even saw the game on court 2 stop and look for a second to appreciate the juniors game. As we mentioned there are lots of little highlights like these and we are just glad that everyone had a great time and that we saw fantastic floorball played across the very best level in Australia down to the people that just started playing less than 4 weeks ago. Thanks for making it happen.

Juniors: Winners – Pakenham Squishees, Runner-up – Northern Beaches Stingrays Juniors / Best Scorer: Ben Allen – Pakenham Squishees

This was without a doubt the most exciting sight of the weekend, having three junior teams playing our first ever junior NBO. Pakenham Squishees juniors were clearly the benchmark and it was obvious that they had a good couple of years advantage on the other two teams. But thanks to all the players to play in such a great spirit and even offering Zoro demo to the other juniors. We hope to have you back next year. By that stage we will have improved to make the competition a lot harder for you.

Mixed: Winners – Western Exports, Runner-up – Northern Beaches Stingrays Mixed / Best Scorer: Maria Hellstrand – Northern Beaches Stingrays

We were kind of hoping that you guys would win the trophy. Just because this guarantees us that you come back next year so that we have another WA team playing again. Obviously that wish changed a little when you played Northern Beaches Stingrays Mixed in the final… But well done for taking home the goods and it’s great to have been able to welcome the first WA team to NBO. We hop you are back even though we understand it’s cheaper for you to go to Bali for a week than NBO for two days!

Elite: Winners – Bondi Raptors, Runner-up – Newcastle / Best Scorer: Jonathan Veron – Newcastle

Having the current Australian Champions, NSW Elite Series winners, CFO winners and all the runner-ups of those 3 competitions in the Men’s Elite competition confirms the high quality field at NBO and made for an intriguing set-up from the word get go. There were a lot of matches for teams to get revenge or confirm that their win wasn’t luck. Stingrays managed to get some retaliation after the AFO loss against the Squishees securing a draw, although the equaliser two seconds from full time hurt a little. Newcastle then managed to get over their heart breaking NSW final loss to the Stingrays by beating them in the semis, while on the other court Glebe was trying to turn around the CFO final loss to Bondi. However Bondi managed a cliff hanger 2:1 victory over Glebe to advance to the final and give themselves a shot at a unique CFO/NBO double. In the end it came down to a tight and very entertaining grand final between Newcastle and Bondi that ended in a 1:1 draw after full time. And for the first time in NBO history the final game was decided with the cruellest of ways – a sudden death penalty shoot-out. And Bondi had the better nerves and the luck of the post on their side to win after the first penalty. Well done to this historic CFO/NBO double.

NBO 2012 – The Results

Another awesome and successful Northern Beaches Open was held over the weekend. Congratulations to the 3 winners. Pakenham Squishees winning the Juniors, Western Exports ensuring their trip from Perth was worth it by winning the Mixed competition and Bondi Raptors doing the CFO/NBO double by winning the Elite category. Individual scorer stats and tournament report will be uploaded shortly. In the meantime please feel free to check out the results here.

Try the NEXT OLYMPIC sport

Floorball has officially been recognised by the IOC. This is an important, logical step for the sport that has seen a phenomenal growth across the globe in the last 20 years. We are proud that we as a club have done our bit to get to this level, when we started the sport in Australia in 1994. We are the foundation club with a proud history and great successes in this country.

This is however only the start for us. To this date we are the most successful club in Australia and are building towards that Olympic dream with an absolute focus on growing floorball in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

We are currently running trial sessions for all ages and fitness levels. Floorball is safe and easy to play and I’m afraid to say slightly addictive too. Once you picked up a stick it’s very hard to put it back down. This is why Body&Soul named floorball as one of the top 8 fitness trends in 2012.

If you are keen to try the next Olympic Sport for yourself, please get in touch as we are running trial sessions throughout August and September. Qualified instructors will explain how the sport started and 5 minutes in you will be chasing that white ball like the pros. You won’t need to bring anything in particular to the session – other than your normal gym gear – we will bring the sticks and balls for you. In

So close… Stingrays runner up at Australian Championship

Before the AFO started not many people probably had the Northern Beaches Stingrays teams in their list of favorites to take out another title. After all it’s been 4 years since we last won and looking at the squad it was more or less still the same. In total 7 players were in the team this year that won the 2008 championship and 6 of them were also in the 2006 squad. So the questions were always going to be: ‘Does experience still count for that much at an AFO and could the fitness of the team be an issue’.

I think we clearly answered both of those questions with a magical run all the way to the grand final. The experience came to play after losing the first two group games without panicking. But also knowing that we would only have keepers available from day 2 didn’t seem to bother anyone in the team. We know that the tournament really only starts on day 3 with the quarterfinals. And two beautifully and solid games saw us proceed rather untroubled into the final to meet the Pakenham Squishees in front of their home crowd. It would have been our 5th AFO title and there was no evidence of lack of fitness levels as the team prepared beautifully all season to peak for the NSW grand final (read report here) and of course AFO. So clearly experience still counts for a lot in a tournament like the AFO and while probably not the fastest team on the court these days, we mixed it well with the younger teams with a solid and focused preparation.

So why didn’t we win? Well we clearly were only the second best team in the tournament. Pakenham Squishees were the team of the moment and managed to win the title undefeated. The last time a team managed that was in 2008 and the team was the Northern Beaches Stingrays. We have played the Squishees many times and even back in 2007 we recognised and told the Squishees that one day they would lift the tophy, as their talent was raw and obvious. They have matured enough to be the team to beat in the future and we are happy that for their first title they had to beat us. Again congratulations to the Squishees not only for winning the title but for organising a brilliant AFO. We probably also played in front of the biggest crowd ever in Australia and that was something special.

To our team! Congratulations for once again showing the NB fighting spirit and using all our experience to our advantage. We can be proud to still make a run to the finals and finished a brilliant season in this fashion. We will see you all next year!
